Lonavala, a popular misty weekend getaway for the crowd in Mumbai and Pune, is a hill station surrounded by green valleys in western India. The name Lonavla is derived from the Sanskrit lonavli, which refers to the many caves like Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa that are close to Lonavala.
Away from the crowd of the bustling metropolitan cities of Mumbai and Pune, Lonavala offers a much-needed retreat to city dwellers. Lonavala and the adjacent Khandala are the twin hill stations in the Sahyadri ranges that demarcate the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan Coast.
Although this place can be visited any time of the year, especially during summers and monsoons, the tourism here peaks and comes to life during the rainy season as the countryside turns lush green with waterfalls and ponds. Pleasant and healthy weather, magnificent exquisiteness and cascades, historical forts, ancient caves and beautiful lakes make it the most sought after destination in India.
Enveloped by Sahayadri hills, it is the perfect destination for trekking and mountaineering. The exquisiteness and charm of this place have always magnetized the attention of tourists, honeymooners, youth, families and celebrities. Lonavala is also famous throughout India for the hard candy sweet known as 'chikki'.
For Mumbai suburbs, local trains are available from Karjat. It is also an important town on the Mumbai-Pune road link. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Pune highway pass through Lonavala and Khandala.
Lonavala is one such destination which makes for a superb place to relish natural beauty. There are oodles of attractions in this place that one can discover, making any visitor fascinated and ecstatic.
